The Mamertine Prison

The Mamertine Prison in Rome is significant because it is the traditional site of imprisonment for the Apostles Peter and Paul shortly before they were to be martyred. It is also Rome’s oldest prison which for many centuries housed the enemies of Rome, while awaiting their execution.  The Cross on the altar in the lower chapel is upside down, since according to tradition Saint Peter was crucified that way.

History
  • The prison was originally called the Carcer Tullianum.

  • The cross on the altar in the lower chapel is upside down, as per tradition, because Saint Peter was crucified that way 
  • The prison is believed to be the place where Paul referred to in his Second Letter to Timothy.
