Northern Greece offers some spectacular landscapes for those that only know the Greek islands or the barren landscapes of Crete. Northern Greece remains lush and fresh even during the summer months and it boasts a particularly rich cultural heritage covering the classical Greece, Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
In the east lies the country’s cultural capital, Thessaloniki, a vibrant city where history and modernity collide in an eclectic mix of ancient ruins and sleek apartment buildings. Walking through its streets, you’ll pass remnants of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman eras, all intertwined with contemporary life, creating an architectural anarchy that’s both chaotic and captivating. The majestic palm trees that once lined the city’s boulevards were uprooted during the harsh years of dictatorship, but the spirit of the city remains alive in its bustling markets, lively cafés, and vibrant nightlife.
For a taste of nature, head west through the rugged mountains that dominate the landscape, where towering cliffs, deep gorges, and dense forests unfold into breathtaking vistas. This journey will lead you to Ioannina, a picturesque lakeside city nestled on the edge of Lake Pamvotida. Known for its rich history and natural beauty, Ioannina is a place where ancient civilizations left their indelible marks. The Macedonians, Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Slavs, and Ottomans all passed through this region, their influences still visible in the city’s architecture, cultural traditions, and, most notably, its food. In Ioannina, you’ll find a harmonious blend of flavors from across centuries: Ottoman-inspired pastries, traditional Greek pies, and fresh, local fish from the lake. It’s a city that tells a story of layers upon layers of history, waiting to be explored.
